Joshua Alexander, MS candidate, Graduate Researcher

About Me: I am an M.S. Biology student at Ball State University and am pursuing a Graduate Certificate in Biotechnology. I completed my undergraduate degree at Ball State in Biology and Pre-Medicine with minors in Chemistry and Health Humanities. I joined the Sharma Lab in Fall 2026. My interests are human health, physiology, and cardiovascular development.

Project in Sharma Lab: I am currently working on the proposal for my thesis. In addition to that I am helping with lab management, maintaining mouse lines, and performing genotyping. I will also be training on the downstream analysis processes such as RNA extraction, western blotting, and immunostaining.

About Me: I am a Senior Majoring in Biology with a concentration in Genetics. I am also on the Pre-Med track and am completing the Undergraduate Biotechnology Certificate. I started in the Sharma Lab in Fall 2024. My main interests are the cardiovascular system and genetics.

Project in Sharma Lab: The current project our lab is working on is measuring ECM gene expression in control vs APJ cKO hearts. There are three lines we are using to test this and we have divided them between the undergraduates and graduate students to help manage. I oversee and do experiments for one of the lines and assist in training the other undergraduates in maintaining their lines. My responsibilities include mouse colony work, Tamoxifen induction, embryo/tissue harvesting, genotyping and downstream analysis including RNA extraction, qPCR, Western Blotting, and Immunostaining. I also help manage the lab website.

About Me: I am an undergraduate senior, majoring in biology with a concentration in microbiology. I joined Dr. Sharma's lab during my junior year working on cell culturing and molecular techniques. My main interests are genetics, and the role and impact microorganisms have on the body.

Project: My responsibilities in the lab include management of a mouse line, and genotyping. I will also be training on the downstream analysis processes.

About Me: I am an undergraduate Senior majoring in Forensic Science with a concentration in forensic biology, along with a minor in digital forensics. I joined the Sharma Lab in Summer of 2026. My interests are anatomy and cardiovascular growth.

Project in Sharma Lab: My responsibilities in the lab include management of a mouse line, and genotyping. I am training other undergraduates on the genotyping workflow from DNA isolation, to PCR, to gel electrophoresis and imaging analysis. I will also be training on more of the downstream analysis processes.
